Tameside Hospital Macmillan Cancer Unit

Focusing on the patient journey, the Tameside Hospital Macmillan Cancer Unit provides oncology treatment and a cancer information and support centre serving the Tameside and Glossop region of north west England. IBI Group, working with Macmillan Cancer Support, the hospital team and an appointed artist, was able to take a holistic design approach, integrating interiors, landscaping and art into the fabric of the Unit in order to create a tranquil and reassuring environment.

Patient comfort, privacy and dignity were Macmillan’s key goals in the design of the Unit which provides chemotherapy and cancer information and support to patients, relatives and carers. IBI was commissioned to design the specialised unit following the successful delivery of similar facilities for the national charity.

Bringing together treatment and cancer support services which were previously dispersed, the new Unit’s centralisation means patients and their families no longer have to travel to different hospitals to receive vital cancer care treatment. The interior design of the Unit is enlivened by the work of artist Chris Tipping, inspired by the environment and countryside of Tameside experienced during a 12 mile walk led by former cancer patient, Stewart Ramsden.

Working in close collaboration with Macmillan Cancer Support and the NHS Trust, IBI was able to transform a redundant and institutional day treatment centre into a serene and supportive space. The collaborative efforts of Macmillan and the design team focused on making the Unit a profoundly special place which is highly cherished by the local community.

“The focus had to be about the patient experience and to encourage the creation of a calming, reassuring and comfortable environment aimed at putting patients at ease when they are most apprehensive and vulnerable. We are indebted to our architects, IBI Group, our builders and support contractors… and our friends at Macmillan Cancer Support for helping us create a truly wonderful haven for cancer patients.”
